Presume it would be shady practice, but is it the practice that domain name registers watch what someone has searched for and when they find a good candidate domain (but intend to decide later on purchase), they snatch it up if not registered within a defined period like 24 hours.I have my suspicions but then again I know that despite how unique we think we are we are ultimately quite predictable (in which case they should have predicted I was going to buy and leave it alone)

Interisle Consulting Group has joined the substack community. Here, our partners will share their experience in cybersecurity and cybercrime research, Internet infrastructure and technology, mobility and wireless, policy and governance, patents, and standards development.

We begin with a look at new gTLDs that earned our respect for admirably managing DNS abuse. We identify these “silver linings”, explain how they are differentiated from publicly available new gTLDs, and make a case for ICANN to carefully consider this differentiation as it seeks to complete of policy activity for the New gTLD Program: Next Round in May 2025.

Recommendations please!

What's a good domain name registration company?

Specifically for:

* UK resident (this doesn't mean the registrar should be UK based, it may actually mean the opposite! I'm not sure)
* Personal websites
* cheap and doesn't hike prices on renewal
* OK for privacy and security
* not a reseller

I don't need hosting, just domain transfer/registration.

thanks!

EDIT TL:DR for those who can't/won't read the full thread - the answer depends very much on what tld you are registering - as different registrars are subject to different upstream prices for any given tld.

A registrar charging more is not necessarily profiting more, they may just be being charged more by the registry, or be using a wholesaler/middleman for admin convenience.

It also depends on how price sensitive you are and whether consolidating domains with disparate tlds to one trusted registrar is worth a price penalty to you.

Absolutely BANANAS how #Google sold of its #DomainRegistration business to #SquareSpace, which has immediately turned around and sold itself to some #PrivateEquity firm, so all my #domains are now in the hands of some shady Mitt-Romney-like motherfuckers.

Anyone have recommendations for a registrar who is satisfied just taking a hundred dollars from me every year to do basically nothing, and won't inevitably sell me out to bottom-feeding capitalists for an extra buck?

Great responses! This is what I love about #Mastodon.

@shuLhan — Thanks for a vote against #Squarespace.

On the positive side, thanks for #recommendations of:
* #CloudFlare from @aohorodnyk
* name.com from @Lesley
* hover.com from @ipstenu

Does anyone else have a #recommendation for a #DomainRegistrar whose UI lets me make changes to my #DNS #domain without being bombarded by #ads (or outright failures) in the process?

Years ago I switched my #DomainRegistrar from register.com to #Google #Domains. I liked the Google Domains UI. It let me get in, make changes, and get out without being bombarded by #ads.

I should’ve known Google would kill a decent product.

They're selling each #domain to #Squarespace. Does anyone have experience with Squarespace? Is their #DNS interface as clutter/ad free? Should I transfer to #WordPress instead?
