＜ヤドリギを知っていますか＞

私はその名を聞いたこと（読んだこと）はあるのですが、昨年（2024年）の11月末に奈良県の御所（ごせ）へ行ったときに初めて実物を見ました。

川沿いの道を歩いていると、葉が落ちた木の枝に直径60センチほどの球形の物体が付いていました。酒蔵で新酒ができたことを知らせる杉玉に似た形です。

はじめてそれを見た時、誰かがイタズラで杉玉を作って枝にくくりつけたのではないかと思っていました。近くにお地蔵さんの祠を掃除している方がいらっしゃったので「あれは何ですか？」と尋ねたところ、『ヤドリギ』だと教えてもらいました。

その方のお話では、この辺りでは冬になると桜の枝にそれができて、春になって桜の花が咲く頃には消えてしまうとのことでした。

その数日後、親しいアンティークショップの展示即売会へ行ったとき、古い陶器の器にヤドリギの小枝が生けてありました。小枝の先に直径8ミリ程の黄色い実が多数付いていて、その表面は粘り気がありました。

想像ですが、冬の時期は雀などの野鳥がヤドリギの密集した枝の中に入って寒さを忍ぶのではないでしょうか。
