An Ioniq 5 just drove 400,000 miles, 12 to 16 years of normal drive distance, and its battery is 87% of new health.

Batteries are going to be cheaper, longer lasting and less hard to source and build than many warned.

Salt batteties, cheap plentiful salt batteries are rolling out for utilities and cars already.

Accessory maker Elecom has announced what it’s claiming to be the first consumer-ready power bank that uses a #sodium-#ion battery instead of a lithium-ion one.
In addition to being more environmentally friendly to manufacture,
the 9,000mAh Na Plus can be used in extreme temperatures with less risk of overheating,
and has — Elecom claims — a lifespan of almost 5,000 charges.
Even if you’re recharging it every single day, after 13 years it should still be providing power.
Sodium-ion battery technology is new compared to lithium-ion tech, and production capacities haven’t reached the level of lithium-ion batteries.
So while a little deal-hunting can get you a basic 10,000mAh lithium-ion power bank from companies like Anker for less than $20, the Na Plus is debuting in Japan (in black and light gray color options) for 9,980 yen, or around $67.
Elecom hasn’t yet announced a wider rollout

The Verge · A sodium-ion portable power bank comes to marketBy Andrew Liszewski

Yadea, which has claimed the title of the world’s largest electric vehicle maker for seven years running, has just announced a new electric motorbike powered by the company’s innovative #HuaYu #sodium-#ion #battery technology.

Yadea has long dominated the electric two-wheeler and three-wheeler market globally,
but has generally relied on both #lithium-#ion and #lead #acid batteries to power its vehicles in different markets.

The newly unveiled electric scooter uses Yadea’s recently introduced sodium battery technology,
offering what the company says is outstanding performance in range, charging speed, and safety.

Using the HuaYu Sodium Superfast Charging Ecosystem presented by Yadea, the battery can reach 80% charge in just 15 minutes, providing greater convenience for riders.

Yadea’s sodium battery has successfully passed more than 20 safety tests, many focusing on its resistance to fire and explosions under extreme conditions like punctures and compression.

Yadea’s new sodium battery offers an energy density of 145 Wh/kg and a lifespan of up to 1,500 cycles at room temperature,
with the company rating it for a five-year useful lifespan.

It also includes a three-year warranty for added assurance.

With excellent low-temperature capabilities, the battery retains over 92% of its discharge capacity at -20°C, making it well-suited for colder climates.

@JessTheUnstill EXACTLY!

  • THROW IT OUTSIDE WITH SOMETHING LIKE A SHOVEL AND THE SHOVEL AS WELL!

#LithiumBatteries are #MetalFires and thus extremely hot.

  • Plus they also release #FluoricAcid vapours which are propably the most dangerous shite a person can be exposed that isn't straight-up a chemical warfare agent!

VACATE THE AREA AND TELL EVERYONE TO ALSO VACATE IT!

  • The only way to "extinguish" a #MetalFire like #Lithium, #Magnesium and #Sodium is to literally suffocate it in DRY SAND and let the heat cause it to literally glass itself...

As a fmr. firefighter I can account that any #LithiumBattery fire would be left to controllably burn out when feasible because there ain't #HAZMAT suits rated for such heat exposure and #Nomex won't protect against gaseous exposures and fumes, which is why firefighters sometimes have to undress with the respirator on to not get intoxicated from the fumes in their jackets when facing a regular household fire...

#Sodium-ion batteries are one credible alternative to #lithium. The advantage of sodium is that the mineral is cheaper and easier to source; and sodium batteries hold their charge for much longer than lithium-ion.
But like all emerging technologies they also have their problems.
The batteries are less energy dense than lithium-ion and require more space and material to store the same amount of charge.

My prediction is natrium (sodium) cells are going to hit stationary energy storage fairly quickly. I recently got quotes from my supplier in China and they came out about 30% more expensive than LFP in the 200AH - 280AH range.

They don't appear to be as robust (cycles etc) as LFP but they are a new product so I'd expect this to improve quickly - also at present there aren't many people making them in volume.
