I'm PJ Coffey, 40s, non-binary.

I'm a geek and very interested in Curation especially

If you came for roleplaying things go to Pin2.

If you came for activism go to Pin3

If you came for non-roleplaying geek things go to Pin4.

If you came for counselling go to Pin5.

If you would like a follow back, have a read of what seems relevant and write something to let me know how I should curate you for my lists. :)

Pin 1/5

I can't sleep so I'm going to make that your problem. Let's talk about curation of information, no come back! I mean "gaining visibility and reach for your posts on Mastodon."

I'm a big nerd so I like to find out how things work. I knew how stuff worked on Twitter and why it was a Gen X/boomer platform. In this thread I hope to explain why Mastodon is a millennial platform, why there's no search*, and what you can do about it.

1/T

I) Mastodon is a millennial platform

II) There is no search* on Mastodon

Here's some for you:

Private meaning you choose the people who see it. There are four levels of privacy on a post setting.

Globe means that the federated timeline, the local timeline, your followers and people who you tag can see it.

Unlock means randoms who click a post, followers and people who you tag can see it.

Lock means that your followers and people who you tag can see it.

Envelope means that the people who you tag can see it.

(And always mods. Like on Twitter.)

4/T

II) There is no search* on Mastodon

II) There is no search* on Mastodon

The second way to increase your reach is hashtags, #. These are the only way to find things on Gargron/vanilla/official Mastodon.

# let you: label posts so that people that are interested can find out more.

Find other people who like that thing.

Mute topics that you don't want to see.

This works both ways. People following # like journalists and even captain scarlet have found posts I've put up to lead them somewhere useful.

You can "fish" for # using autocomplete which helps.

7/T

The final way that I've found to increase your reach on vanilla mastodon is the work of @guppegroups they create groups that autoboost any post that mentions them on globe privacy setting (including this one. Untag it if you reply to this.)

This is a great way to:
condense the amount of accounts you follow. Not miss anything that is considered important by the person tagging them

And reach beyond the invisible walls inside Mastodon. ETA: genealysis.com/tip-hashtags

8/T

genealysis.comUsing Hashtags : Genealysis

Invisible walls? Inside Mastodon? Yes. Decentralised, Federation, blablabla.

This means that if you are on Mastodon.social posting about and all the enthusiasts are on @your.interest but no one from @your.interest has ever looked at Mastodon.social then your hashtags will NOT work.

Your # will not work on Mastodon.social in this case. They will return blank. Equally @your.interest will NEVER see your posts tagged . Until someone from there visits Mastodon.social 9/T

Once this happens then the walls come down and suddenly you and your pals can geek out about journalism, , LevelUpA5e or trees with big trunks, Windows, windows, whatever.

A significant portion of my posts are devoted to helping people find each other because I really love being on and helping people. It's not something I do for the thanks but because I believe in the mission.

Boost. #. Groups. = Reach. Tip your servers and @gup.pe.

Neuromatch SocialJonny (@jonny@neuromatch.social)@maegul@mas.to @Homebrewandhacking@mastodon.ie yes- following a hashtag means that all posts that your server receives that have that hashtag are added to your feed. Someone using a hashtag that no one on your server follows will not be added to your feed. The guppe group boosts everything that mentions it. if you are following the group, then all posts that mention to bot will be added to your feed even if no one on your instance follows the person who posted it.

See above thread for an explanation.

The "invisible walls" of Mastodon mean that # search isn't always going to tell you what's out there. If you think, "Surely people from this major city are on the Fedi/Masto?" Then YES. They ARE! But no one on your server has found them yet.

There's a solution to get beyond the invisible walls. Imperfect but here we go:

Type this into the search box (without spaces)

@ tag-$tagname @ relay.fedi.buzz

E.g. using dnd as the tag name.
@tag-dnd

Works fine

But it doesn't work for:
@tag-a5e

Like gup.pe groups this is a discovery tool. It grabs info from "out of network" I.e. servers that no one is following.

I'm not a technical person but hey maybe this helps!

@Homebrewandhacking I have no idea where to curate myself. I have recently started writing science articles about data science as it relates to other fields. I have an intense interest in anthropology and have studied it for decades. I am also an ardent Democratic communist. Oh, and I've been playing ttrpgs for 35 years and love that it is expanding beyond the tiny little realm of d&d.

@Doom_Bunny So seems like Science and Politics would be good things to follow you for? 😀

@jason_burnett

Hey, cool. 😀 always happy to chat about my work.

Currently putting the finishing touches on a medusa heritage for A5e which involves a little expansion on the lore to bring out the tragic nature of the curse.

@Homebrewandhacking I am using #Misskey for #Curation due to its custom timeline features (called “Antennas”) that allow me to differentiate between those I follow.

@darnell

Your tech wizardry baffles me. Love that for you. 😀 I don't know what you're talking about but I'm excited to learn!

I guess Misskey does a similar thing to Mastodon in that it's part of the Fediverse?

Antennas are... IDEK. What are they? Sounds cool!

When I talk about curation. I mean whacking # on things so people can find posts here and helping people find information and help spread theirs across servers. Make connections between different pieces.

@Homebrewandhacking @darnell misskey is an activitypub platform designed in Japan, it has quite a different feel, but can also be run through the mastodon apps on the go

@anubis2814 @darnell

I am charmed and delighted that you think so highly of me and my technical acumen that you would say such a thing. 😀

Could you perhaps explain it to me again, a simple plebeian typing on my android phone? If you need to judge my technical knowledge just scroll up and see my introduction. 😀

@darnell @Homebrewandhacking

Hey Darnell!

I love my Misskey account. Been using it for a few years and when I first created my account there it wasn't widely known, but still far superior to mastopub.

I've lately been drawn to and use Calckey a lot. I like a lot of innovation and I'm excited about features added and on the roadmap...

But still really like my original #Misskey instance too. On the surface, they don't appear all that different, but Calckey is on a completely different track, with a refactoring of the code base to Rust already in the works.

Anyway, here's an article that is just as relevant now as it was when published and has a lot of good tidbits about Misskey (and the demise of mastooub. It includes a paragraph on antennas too.

You might wanna post a little bit about Misskey in the #Fediverse_City matrix room as well :) I'll leave the link to that below as well for others:

@tallship @Homebrewandhacking I remember reading that article last year! I started to become intrigued about #Misskey around that time.

What is cool about the #Fediverse is how diverse it is overall.
