You should know, that when I'm told the volunteer admin of a ~60k (~16k active) user instance tells you that you can't speak Irish there because there's no Irish speaking moderator...
Twitter/X permits speaking Irish. And there's no Irish speakers moderating there, either. And... the Irish speaking tweets are all quite civil and haven't caused issues.
Twitter/X is larger than ~60k.
@mairin
Didn't know the Penal Laws were still in effect around here.
@mairin you can even integrate libretranslate into Mastodon to translate toots.
@mairin a new instance for Irish-speakers, anyone?
Dála an scéil cad é an Ghaeilge ar "instance"? How do you say "instance" in Irish?
@joebreathnach @mairin Bhuel "ásc" b'fhéidir, ach ní úsáidtear an focal sin sa teanga thraidisiúnta ach amháin sa teilgean cainte úd "ar an gcéad ásc".
@PanuHoglund Mastodon.ie is wonderful for this
@mairin Seems you're talking about fosstodon and not mastodon.ie, right?
@mairin I know this is very personal to you so I'll ask first: Can I boost this?
@mairin and it's not like irish isn't supported by google translate et al for gods sake
@mairin like come on den är 2023 om jag kan bara tala på ett språk (engelska) på en instans kommer jag att blockera den permanent. fossbröder...
@mairin I'm sorry, what does "You cannot speak Irish" mean? I do not understand this phrase at all. How dare someone prohibit you from speaking any language? I mean, should I search for a Quenya-speaking moderator if I wish to speak High-Elvish? Or Latin? And what if I invent a language? That is just pure nonsense to me.
@mairin I'm curious. Does amadan mean the same thing in Irish Gaelic as it does in the Scottish Gaelic?
@ariaflame yes! amadán in Irish :)
