I am re-posting of this old article from one Kristy Major, of The Independent written in February 2017, titled “When did fascism become so cool? PewDiePie’s antics are the thin end of the wedge.“
This was just after Trump was elected the first time, and two years before the Christchurch fascist terrorism incident that resulted in 49 innocent people shot to death by a mass shooter who live streamed his murder spree on the Internet, exclaiming “Subscribe to PewDiePie” as a joke just 6 minutes before pulling the trigger.
And even without looking it up, I know there would have been people back in 2017 who would have called Kristy Major an “alarmist” and chiding her for casting wild accusations of fascism at the drop of a hat. But she turned out to be right.
Since #Trump was re-elected, we have seen US citizens and legal residents being kidnapped by the police and sent to the #CECOT concentration camp in El Salvador without due process. This is no time for chiding people over “alarmism.” The threat of #fascism is very real and present in this moment, and people in the US need to understand this before they become the next victim.
“Edgelords” who normalize hate speech under a veneer of entertainment are absolutely part of the problem regardless of whether they are doing it out of ignorance. We must not tolerate this “edgelord” behavior from anyone anymore.
