Day 18 of our DRAdvent Calendar!
We’re sharing slides from Joyce Kao and Carolina Natel de Moura on learning outcomes and flipped classrooms, which were a key part of their DRA Train-the-Trainer journey!
Discover how to create effective learning environments and enhance your teaching methods with these valuable resources.

@sbrl In flipped classrooms, students work through lecture material on their own, and meet their lecturer for joint exercise work. Then, the lecturer is around to discuss, to provide feedback. There are lots of meta-studies on the effectiveness of different interpretations of “flipping”, with mixed results. I currently experiment with “Fail, flip, fix, and feed” of [1] (without significant changes in exam results, but with more fun in the classroom). If you are interested, my teaching statement [2] explains my approach with more references.

@sbrl On flipped classrooms: Where I come from, lecturing is a dominant mode of teaching. It is an effective way of teaching. However, learning is pulling information out of one’s head (aka active learning), strengthening the brain and its physical structures with continued training (similarly to training in the gym for other muscles). Thus, there is little learning in lectures, at least not when I lectured (figured out painfully with bad results on classroom response quizzes that I perceived to be easy), although student evaluations where good. Students left lectures with a good feeling and struggled with the non-obvious complexities of lecture material and exercise work on their own.

Getting close to being happy with how I organise the content for a module I have been entrusted with.
It is a #Git organised set of notes for a #flippedClassroom module.
All notes are written in #CommonMark (#OrgMode if it was just me ;-))
#Pandoc is at the heart of preparing the written notes.
+ Custom templates help satisfy local branding requirements
+ Pandoc features enable #moodle compatible HTML to be generated with #MathJax maths and embedded resources. (Moodle is just a carrier!)
+ Use #CSL to generate references
#Make enables targets to generate ALL THE TARGETS, ensuring correct pandoc options are used:
+ Standalone HTML for local use, with #SimpleCSS for styling
+ HTML optimised for Moodle;
+ LaTeX;
+ PDF (via LaTeX)
+ DOCX
Slides and assessment specs are still LaTeX.

Oh great, this year's master programme starts two weeks earlier than last year! Which means I have to set up the #flippedclassroom stuff until *checks notes* five days ago! And the block seminar is going to take place in *checks notes again* a week! Cool cool cool cool cool. And the time table telling me this was only published yesterday. I just love academic processes.

Here is my #introduction. I am a clinical psychologist that went back to academia and turned professor. My research is in the intersection between clinical, social and work #psychology. Three major topics for the time being: #musicianshealth, #thefutureofwork and #socialanxiety.
I am fond of experimenting with #podcasts #flippedclassroom, #experientiallearning and #simulation in my classes.

My latest Edutopia article was published today! It focuses on how microlectures can be used for flipped learning. Enjoy!

"It seems that implementations of flipped learning perpetuate the things they claim to reduce, that is, passive learning.”
This article does go on to give merit to the Flipped Method, but the critiques are worth keeping in mind.
