Mares’s leaf-toed gecko has been rediscovered on Rábida Island in the Galápagos after being thought extinct for more than a century, with only ancient bones as previous evidence of its existence.

Genetic analysis revealed the surviving geckos are genetically distinct from populations on other Galápagos islands, suggesting they survived in hiding during the invasive brown rat invasion rather than recolonizing from other islands.

Mongabay Environmental News · How a gecko species defied extinction on a Galápagos islandOn Rábida Island in the Galápagos, where red-tinged beaches meet ancient lava formations, Mares’s leaf-toed gecko (Phyllodactylus maresi) is back. Once thought extinct on this island, a genetically distinct population has survived here against all odds, scientists have now confirmed. For more than a century, despite intensive collecting efforts across the Galápagos, no living specimen […]

I've been playing with different #Android #WebBrowser. My primary is #Firefox with #Vivaldi as a #Chromium backup. Vivaldi is fine, but I prefer other options over it.

I tend to prefer #OpenSource options, so I tried #Brave again because it has some decent privacy options built-in, but it actually feels a little slower and reinforces my preference for #Gecko over Chromium. I also have reservations about the owner.

#Waterfox seems like a possibility and I might try #Fennec.

I don't want to sacrifice a ton of usability for the sake of privacy for every day tasks.

New gecko discoveries hint at hidden depths of wildlife haven in Cambodia fauna-flora.org/news/new-gecko paper: zookeys.pensoft.net/article/13

"Four populations of the striped Kamping Poi bent-toed #gecko were found and identified as a #NewSpecies... the geographic isolation of the #karst formations they inhabit probably means that these populations are on separate evolutionary trajectories, and further genetic analyses may reveal whether they are in fact four different species instead of one."

Hidden in sacred forests: Microendemic #gecko discovered in Madagascar
phys.org/news/2025-07-hidden-s

"A #NewSpecies, Paragehyra tsaranoro, has been discovered in #Madagascar's Tsaranoro valley. It has only been found in 3 small forest fragments, all ~15 km of one another, remnants of a once-larger continuous forest... these fragments are known locally as Forêts sacrées because they host boulders—ancestral tombs for the #Betsileo people. Protecting cultural heritage has helped safeguard local species"
