The Birth of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind by #JulianJaynes was another obsession of my 20s, I read it in full at least twice and have reread various sections many times. I don't think it is supposed to hold much water as a theory of #consciousness but it sure rings true to me.
