I was there in a lecture theatre in #UCT Upper Campus, in 1999, and I voted to merge the #SouthAfrican #DemocraticParty into the #NationalParty. I listened to #JamesSelfe, of blessed and lamented recent memory, argue against it, and I remember his huge and gracious smile when he lost the argument at the vote.

I remember talking to Ma Baker from #Ottery. I remember marvelling how the DP was channeling the hopes of working class activists who saw how their tough leverage could change things in the Western Cape.

I remember my wife Julia, a DP grey eminence no matter what she might have thought of that idea, readying the new #DemocraticAlliance for their first governments. Had she lived? No idea, so many might-have-beens.

I miss those days, and how I wish things had worked out differently. I FAFO, I freely admit.

Former WA #Nationals leader Mia Davies takes tilt at new Perth federal seat of #Bullwinkel.

Just 18 months after saying she had no fuel left in the tank and quitting as WA Opposition Leader, #MiaDavies is making a tilt at federal politics.

On Friday she will announce she will seek pre-selection to contest the new federal seat of Bullwinkel for the #NationalParty.

Federal Nationals leader David Littleproud said Ms Davies has the "fight needed to keep the live sheep export industry". #auspol

I know! Different spelling, but I couldn’t resist.

@digichelle it’s worth remembering that Peter Thiel was given citizenship to #NZ after just 12 days in the country, by Nathan Guy, a #NationalParty MP. So everyone in NZ can feel proud of the achievements of this fellow countryman. Particularly the bit where his company #Palantir is providing #AI weapons for the killing of children.
