Topcon Story: Topcon Enigma

An extremely rare and long out of print #book. Covering the story of the Tokyo Kogaku co. & the Topcon cameras & #lenses. Originally published in #italian by the Nassa Watch Gallery (Lugano) in 1997 and also translated to English.

It emphasizes Topcor R & RE line and the Topcon manual #cameras. There needs to be a complement to this covering more the Wink / Uni / auto 100 / #unirex / UV lenses and accessories.

“Deactown”

Winston Salem, North Carolina, has a few nicknames. Also known as Camel city.

On my last photo outing, i took two cameras. One to test (Topcon IC-1 focal plane shutter 35mm slr camera) and one known to work (Beseler #Topcon Auto 100 SLV leaf shutter). That way i would have at least one good roll of film. Turns out both worked fine. The IC-1 had a wide 35mm f3.5 lens while the Auto 100 had a 53mm f2. The 53mm framed this like i wanted from across the street.

Black and white digital photo rig:

Fujifilm XT-20, Acros std b&w film simulation, strong grain, speed booster M42 to Fuji X, Topcor UV to M42 adapter, Tokyo Kogaku Topcor UV 100mm f4 short telephoto.

For close-up, I add a Topcon Close up n.1 filter lens. For contrast I use topcon red R2 or yellow Y2 or gradient filters. You can get similar result (close) with Acros R or Acros Ye.

And for reference, here are the other two silver and black versions of the UV Topcor 53mm lenses. The one on the right is the intermediary model, with a slit instead of a j slot, and the left has the late "solid" tabs. The lens release button is also different. Optical design appears to be the same for all 3 versions of the lens.

With the lens removed from the Wink S Mirror camera, the mount on the lens side reveals the earliest type of lens mount, with the retaining tabs having a J slot, possibly to apply some pressure on the opening tabs on the camera mount side. I've only seen this J slot on the 53mm, but I suppose an early 35mm or 100mm lens from 1963 would have the same.

Uses a seikosha leaf shutter like the Uni.

The first Topcon camera using UV Topcor interchangeable lenses was the Wink S Mirror. This was based on the Topcon Wink E mirror (Beseler Topconette in the US), the E for "electric eye", a selenium cell to meter light.

The 1962 Wink E had fixed lens whereas the 1963 Wink S had 3 lenses available: 53mm f2, 35mm f3.5 and 100mm f4. notice the large selenium meter in front of the pentaprism.

Also sold as the Porst Reflex S.

Developed the test #film from the black #topcon New IC-1 & the auto aperture works intermittently, that is to say almost never. 4 shots out of 25. It'll have to go through a full revision and test.

Fortunately I have a Topcon IC-1 original (in silver finish) that I've cleaned and looks to be working ok. The battery cover was stuck due to batteries that leaked. Was able to free it, removed the bad batteries, cleaned the contacts, put new batteries and tested the modes. #photography #repair #diy

Back row: black plastic hood with clamp for UV Topcor 135mm version 1 lens (version 2 has an integrated hood), black screw on hood for UV Topcor 100mm

Middle: black screw on plastic hood for 35mm f3.5, 53mm f2, 50mm f2.8, 50mm f2 and Hi Topcor 55mm 1.8

Front row: silver metallic screw on hood for 28mm f4 and silver metallic screw on hood for 35mm f3.5 and 50mm f2. It also fits 50mm f2.8, 53mm f2 and Hi Topcor 55mm f1.8.

After partially disassembling the lens, I was able to free the adapter. No wonder it was wobbly, it was held together with only one of 3 screws. And, I doubt this is original, but there was a o-ring in the sandwich of parts making up the adapter. My guess is that the o-ring was added to compensate for the 2 missing screws, leaving a path for light to enter without it.

The aperture stop spring and bearing was also missing.

So imagine my surprise when i stumbled upon this lens. Looks like an exakta or early tamron adaptamatic lens, then you recognize the silver band and focus ring as Topcon UV topcor. that’s what the seller tells you, based on the beauty ring. But the mount is wrong. Then, 💡

There is a UV adapter mounted on it. But it is stuck and wobbly, possibly damaged. The aperture ring is also stuck. So maybe it wont be of any use… or perhaps i can repair the adapter…

One of the rarest Topcon accessory is the UV mount adapter. If you look at a UV mount lens, it has no aperture control ring. Works on a UV mount camera as the camera has an aperture ring on the mount. the other Topcon cameras used the R or RE mount (based on exakta) so they made an adapter. Not that many were sold, or maybe they got discarded as people though it was just random lens parts… at any rate they rarely show up for sale anywhere.

The equalizer.

Not Queen Latifah, just a camera. At launch, the Auto 100 came with a 53mm f2 lens and 2 optional lenses, a wide 35mm f3.5 and a 100mm f4. Not long after that they added a 135mm (a massive affair) and a 200mm f4 (the Topcon RE version was 5.6). With the lauch of the Unirex, they would later add a 28mm for the UV line (wink, uni / auto 100, unirex, ic-1). They are called UV #topcor because the glass is coated to block UV, making a uv filter superfluous. #camera #topcon #lens
