@theguardian_science We've known this for decades ... sampling wastewater is a great way to monitor a city's health and habits.

The Ottawa Citizen newspaper reports:

“Wastewater testing for the H5N1 bird flu virus is set to begin in the coming weeks in Ontario communities considered at high risk, said Rob Delatolla, whose University of Ottawa lab will lead the wastewater surveillance as part of a research program based at the University of Guelph. That will likely mean testing wastewater in communities in agricultural regions of the province. It is unclear whether there will also be testing in larger cities. . .

There is currently no widespread wastewater testing program for H5N1 avian influenza in Canada, as there is in the U.S.”

Province says move will 'avoid duplication' as Ottawa expands its monitoring program.

Premier Doug Ford's government is scrapping Ontario's program for sampling wastewater to monitor the level of COVID-19 in the population.

The program measures how much of the virus that causes COVID-19 is circulating around the province and is run by a dozen universities and research sites, through funding from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.

In a statement, a provincial official said the move will "avoid duplication" with a federal program.

#Wastewatertesting does a good job at detecting mpox #infections, bolstering a push to use sewage to track more diseases.

U.S. Centers for #Disease Control and Prevention researchers found that over the course of a week, there was a 32% likelihood the tests would detect the presence of at least one person infected with #mpox in a population ranging from thousands to millions.

The German #RKI 's #WasteWaterSurveillance for #COVID19 now also reports the sequencing of strains.
This could explain why we're seeing so many reinfections - EG.5 is being followed by BA.2.86

Also note that while the cone of uncertainty for the total virus load has narrowed, the trend is still ... very concerning (graph 1, same page).
