New job, new film, new book...Merci Olivier Monod @libe Liberation for summarising my 2025 so far!
Indeed I accepted a job offer @ Masaryk University in Czechia. They have a programme on regional peripheries that seems perfect to continue my research on the effects of climate change & market integration on indigenous communities in Papua New Guinea (PNG) (among my other research on social cohesion).

The film "The Researcher" by @produzionifuorifuoco has already been screened in 13 different countries around the world and recently won the award for "Best Educational Pathway Film" @ International Frome Climate Film Festival.

Finally, my book "A fuoco" (Zooming in) has just been published by @feltrinelli_. It’s the diary of my 28,000 km #NoFly journey from PNG to Europe to reduce my carbon footprint.

Many people ask me if losing my job was "worthwhile". These outcomes would make one feel that it was. But, honestly, I would have done the same even if no one had talked about my story and I hadn't "achieved" anything. For me, the important thing was to remain true to my "climate conscience". I couldn't have done otherwise.

Highlighting for #SolarPunkSunday:

@breadandcircuses Let's talk about #Degrowth...

"Imagine an economy designed to serve the planet and ALL its inhabitants, not just the most powerful. What might that look like?
______________________________________

Countries that have overshot ecological limits would scale back their non-essential production and consumption to lessen environmental impacts and to decarbonise more rapidly by:

❇️ Reducing reliance on cheap fossil energy
❇️ Reducing the use of material-intensive luxuries like SUVs, private jets, and oversized homes
❇️ Stopping unsustainable practices such as the industrial production of meat and the culture of fast fashion
❇️ Curbing the wealth excesses of the very rich
❇️ Promoting public transportation over private vehicle use
❇️ Fostering a culture of durability and repairability in consumer goods

Simultaneously, the focus would shift toward enhancing social progress and human well-being by:

🔷 Guaranteeing universal access to high-quality essential public services like healthcare, education, childcare, and transportation
🔷 Ensuring affordable housing and living wages for all
🔷 Implementing a public job guarantee; a nationally-funded program where the municipal government provides jobs to those willing and able to work

Embracing these changes does *not* mean rejecting technology. A balanced approach where technological innovation and efficiency improvements are pursued as long as they are sustainable, safe, and equitable should be encouraged. The focus is on using resources efficiently, distributing them fairly, and scaling down non-essential production to help societies achieve self-sufficiency and justice."

Get in a meeting with your city councilor or county/metro/state legislator, and tell them climate policy needs to aim past electric cars, raise taxes on fossil fuels & road wear (fees scaled per vehicle weight), price congestion while boosting walk/bike/transit access, and let the market decide rather than try subsidizing a giant #EV as the only path to #decarbonize #transportation. Don't assume delivery means an e-van, assume #cargoBikes, #eBikes. Price the emissions or impact. #ClimateAction

"We need to #decarbonize every single existing building using #Heat Pumps, #solar panels & #retrofits over many years, well known & simple technology. Fantastic for job creation, makes buildings more resilient to extremes of weather, makes them more comfortable & cheaper to run."

Thanks to #China having done the investing into green tech infrastructure and logistics for manufacturing, something the US should have done and benefited from but stuck to subsidizing #carbon fuels instead, data shows that we could completely #decarbonize global electricity by 2030, five years earlier than Biden's bill called for though thanks to tariffs might take the Us longer than everyone else. This will of course leave manufacturing energy like Steel and concrete, as well as shipping and airlines. With pure carbon batteries we could electrolize manufacturing much faster than expected, After that it will require global agreements to force shipping to go full #electric and airlines have to figure out an alternative to fuel such as hydrogen. The LN2 #energy storage system is a powerful method of storing and releasing energy with new tech and will in the process also pull CO2 out of the air. Its possible we could inspite of everything thanks to China survive the worst of climate change and even start to reverse it.

Global #solar and #wind generation will soon overtake nuclear and hydro | RenewEconomy reneweconomy.com.au/global-sol reneweconomy.com.au/global-sol “The #solar growth rate of 22% per year is equivalent to doubling every three years. At this growth rate, solar generation will reach 100,000 TWh per year in 2042 which is enough to fully #decarbonize the global economy.

Solar generation (TWh per year) is tracking to surpass nuclear generation in 2026, wind in 2027, hydro in 2028, gas in 2030 and coal in 2032.”

RenewEconomy · Global solar and wind generation will soon overtake nuclear and hydroOver the past decade, global solar generation has grown ninefold while wind generation has tripled. In contrast, hydro, nuclear and coal generation have barely moved.

I have always been suspicious that the "EVs are too expensive" notion is a plant by Fossil Fuel companies and some car manufacturers to shift the blame to consumers for not transitioning to EVs.

So here's a comparison of the most popular vehicles in Canada in 2022 vs. most popular EVs in Canada in 2024.
driving.ca/column/driving-by-n
driving.ca/column/driving-by-n

(All prices are 2024 models in Canadian $)

10: Hyundai Elantra: $21,999 v Audi Q4 e-tron: $63,400
9: Hyundai Kona: $25,999 v Mustang Mach-E: $57,690
8: Honda Civic: $28,765 v Kia Niro EV: $48,544
7: Honda CR-V: $37,261 v Toyota bZ4x: $48,042
6: Toyota Corolla: $26,372 v Hyundai Ioniq 5: $54,999
5: GMC Sierra: $48,931 v Hyundai Kona Electric: $46,399
4: Chevy Silverado: $47,931 v Volkswagen ID.4: $51,220
3: Toyota RAV4: $36,202 v Chevy Bolt: $41,575
2: Dodge Ram: $37,952 v Tesla Model 3: $53,990
1: Ford F-150: $46,600 v Tesla Model Y: $54,990

Averages: Gas: $35,801.20 EV: $52,084.90

So ya, the difference overall is about $20,000 on average.

However, these are all base prices and while EVs generally have only a few higher priced options, the Gas cars/trucks often start low and have many higher priced options, some over $75K. So I believe the real-world selling price averages would be closer.

I believe it will take governments being aggressive and consistent on their Electric-only targets to force companies to re-tool their productions to both meet demand and bring the prices down.

Both Canada and the USA have recently gone in the opposite direction, both pushing back their EV-only targets. This is both why prices remain high, and we won't hit our CO2 reductions.

And ya, as a proud Hyundai Kona Electric owner, I'm going to finish with this “call-out" from the CEO of Hyundai to other manufacturers.

"Why would anybody want to purchase an EV from an [automaker like Toyota or GM] who’s lobbying against EVs?”

Indeed!
