There's a metal dome over the bar at Kilkenny in Hackeschermarkt that I always wondered if it would act as one of those "two points in an partial ellipsoid can hear each other really well" audio effect...

... and I've finally ended up standing right in that locus for the waiter station across the bar and now the bar staff chitchat is appearing right inside my head.

We got a bus to Holborn, all mention of Boris Johnson's MidTown should be removed! Then walked to the Princess Louis, back to the the Cittie of York and onto the Mitre off Ely Place , then home. It was a dry run for Bill's 3 pub crawl with his OFMAS group ( Old Friends Music Appreciation Society).
He needed to check as one of the group finds walking a tad hard if too far. INMHO I suspect someone will have to accompany him on a bus for part of the way.

On Saturday, 21st December 2024, you are most welcome to join a bunch of geeks who are into ⁨⁨#podcasts⁩⁩ and ⁨⁨#beer⁩⁩ at a ⁨⁨#Podcrawl⁩⁩

Are bridged networks Fediverse too, or Fedi-extensions?

I guess you're only thinking of Bluesky and Nostr.

But technically speaking, both Hubzilla and (streams) are bridged to ActivityPub, too, because neither is based on ActivityPub. I'm replying to you via a bridge right now.

Granted, this bridge named Pubcrawl is an official Hubzilla add-on, it's installed on this hub, and each channel has actually got its own bridge. But it's a bridge.

So if the definition of the Fediverse excludes anything that's bridged in some way in an attempt to keep Bluesky and Nostr out, it also excludes these two, although Hubzilla is as old as the Fediverse itself. Not doing so would amount to a double standard.

The main difference between Bluesky and Nostr on the one hand and Hubzilla and (streams) on the other hand is: Bluesky and Nostr are connected through one third-party bridge each. Hubzilla and (streams) bring their own official bridges.

So one could argue that both do have their own ActivityPub support. Not as their base protocol, through a bridge instead, but that bridge is an official add-on and therefore officially part of the project.

However, one could just as well argue that only Pubcrawl is part of the Fediverse because it "speaks" ActivityPub. The parts of Hubzilla and (streams) beyond Pubcrawl, on Pubcrawl's "far" side, their cores included, are not part of the Fediverse because they're bridged, and they don't run natively on ActivityPub.

Thus, the Fediverse's outer border would cut through Hubzilla and (streams) with the ActivityPub bridge inside the Fediverse and the core and all the other add-ons outside.

Feature request: Multiple Article/Note switches for Pubcrawl

I've opened a new issue in the Hubzilla add-ons repository with a feature request for more than the one Article/Note switch which was introduced with Hubzilla 9.

Here's the text:

Hubzilla 9 has changed how Pubcrawl works: By default, everything goes out as an Article-type object now. A switch can restore the old behaviour, namely everything going out as a Note-type object.

Now, Mastodon handles Note-type objects like native toots. But when it receives an Article-type object, it does not show its content at all. Instead, it shows the title, then the summary, then a link to the original, finally the hashtags. This is by design, fully intentional and absolutely justified; it shall prevent massive blog posts from appearing in Mastodon users' timelines at full length.

But this behaviour does not work well with comments from Hubzilla. Comments can neither have a title nor a summary, and frankly, they shouldn't because they're comments, so they only appear as links with nothing describing or announcing them. Likewise, it doesn't make sense for them to only appear as links on Mastodon, even less when they're comments on Mastodon toots.

The only alternative currently is to switch everything back to being Note-type objects. But to be honest, long, blog-style posts work much better and cause much less trouble on Mastodon as Article-type objects that are only announced as links.

  • No overly long posts in Mastodon timelines
  • Mastodon users can read the posts in their original formatting, not mangled by Mastodon's inability to render embedded images
  • Mastodon users aren't immediately exposed to sensitive images because they won't see the images at all until they open the post, and the title or the summary can warn them and everyone else about these sensitive images

Currently, the only way to have the best of both worlds is to always have the Pubcrawl settings page open and flick that Article/Note switch back and forth. This is rather inconvenient.

Thus, my suggestion is to turn this one switch into four switches:

  • Posts/DMs with a title _(includes posts with a summary; Article-type by default)_
  • Posts/DMs with a summary _(Note-type by default)_
  • Posts/DMs with neither a title nor a summary (Note-type by default)
  • Comments (Note-type by default)

The default settings would make Hubzilla mimick Friendica's behaviour: Friendica always sends everything as an Article-type object if it has a title and as a Note-type object if it doesn't have a title.
