#Woodland wonders. Another very conspicuous member of our small wood is the #lungwort, or #pulmonaria. It grows almost everywhere on the #woodland floor here at home, and comes to life again in early spring. It is among the first plants to #flower and a huge attractor for #bumblebees.

The #lungwort in the #wildflower area of the #garden is flowering. Such a happy sight at this time of the year and so important for early #insects.

What’s in flower at The Fuchsietum? #Lungwort. #Pulmonaria ‘Roy Davidson’ according to a label I found from the previous owners while cleaning up. But it also seems to have seeded itself around a bit so I’m not sure if the name fully applies. #WhatsinFlower

This area is now going into its third season. The pulmonaria is a massive favorite of the Anna’s hummingbirds, which I was not expecting. I suppose it is because it blooms so profusely and early in the season, for a good long period.

Pulmonaria, aka lungwort! So named because people thought the spotted leaves looked like diseased lungs, and in the Doctrine of Signatures, a plant part resembled the body part it was believed to treat.

This #pulmonaria doesn't mind the bitterest cold, even with the snow that came this evening.
