Double-flowered weeping cherry blossoms (yae-shidare-zakura) in Shinjuku Gyoen

A few slender cherry blossom branches hang down from the top of the frame against an indistinct green background.

The blossoms are spaced out, in a variety of stages from bud to fully bloomed, with multi-layered light pink petals which droop down from the branches.

The landscape garden lawn at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

A wide shot of a huge flat lawn area under sunny blue skies with fluffy white clouds. The lawn is trimmed short and is quite dry, a mix of yellow with some green. Across the lawn, 200-300m away, are a variety of different trees, mostly tall and green. A few tall buildings of Tokyo rise in the distance.

The lawn is mostly empty except for a pair of people walking across the middle, carrying an umbrella for shade. Groups of people, very tiny at this distance, relax under the shade of the trees on the other side.

I love the shapes in these branches.

Possibly a Japanese Black Pine, but don't hold me to that.

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, 2025-03-28

A large very roughly barked branch rises from the lower left of the frame, and forks several times, ending in small bundles of long thin needles, some with small cones. The branch is extremely bent and twisty, zigzagging back and forth, giving the impression of a forked lightning bolt.

The dark wood is strongly contrasted against a background of bright blue sky with some thin indistinct white clouds.

Shinjuku Gyoen in the post-sakura season is quite peaceful.

Whenever I've been here before I've either been showing somebody around, or trying to go see all the blossoms myself.

This is the first time I've gone to just sit under a tree, drink some tea, and listen to the wind.

A wide expanse of green park lawn extending off into the distance, completely empty of people, surrounded on all sides by a variety of green leafy trees, cherries, maples, japanese red pines, etc. The sky is clear blue, slightly paler at the horizon from haze.

A grove of large mature cherry trees after the blossom, full of green leaves, dark trunks arching overhead. The ground is covered in a green carpet of low wildflowers / weeds, dandelions, etc. and everything is in dappled sunlight filtered through the cherry leaves. A few park visitors can be seen as small shapes in the distance, sitting on blankets, or walking along the path beside the grove.

Met up with some friends on the weekend who were visiting from Canada, and went to Shinjuku Gyoen.

Just a bit too early for cherry blossoms, this will be amazing in one more week, but it was still a lovely warm day for a stroll.

Looking across a pond in an expansive Japanese garden. A path of rocks leads to a small island in the pond covered with sculpted trees and bushes. On the far shore, a wide lawn with dry yellow grass, and dozens of park visitors walking around or relaxing on the grass. The sky is mixed cloud with some blue, and everything is reflected in the smooth green water of the pond.

My folks are visiting me in Japan, and today we went to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden…

I’ve been a couple of times before in years past, but today was exceptional. It has been rainy all week since they arrived, but today was sunny, the perfect temperature, and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom.
