A fair bit of #StandUpForScience #Indivisible organizing going on - besides student protests
"Climate scientists in the United States are to be cut off from satellite data measuring the amount of sea ice — a sensitive barometer of climate change — as the U.S. Department of Defense announces plans to cancel processing of the data for scientific research."
"The changes are the latest attacks by the U.S. government on science and the funding of scientific research in an effort to slash the budget to enable tax cuts elsewhere. Already, these attacks have seen the Goddard Institute for Space Studies and the National Science Foundation evicted from their offices, references to climate science removed from websites, funding of data for hurricane forecasts cancelled, and dozens of NASA missions under threat and their project teams asked to produce close-down plans as the space agency's budget is slashed."

A diplomatically phrased but clear warning from the International Science Council.
"the International Science Council appeals to all decision makers to ensure
that the principles of science and its institutions are protected, and that
international scientific cooperation is maintained and ideally strengthened."

Today the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies celebrates its 85th birthday - founded in 1940 during, and in part because of, WW2 it reminds us that the pursuit of knowledge, science and scholarship is important and worthy of support even in the darkest of times. A message that sadly needs repetition today.
So many people coming forward to speak up for #Science
Scientists, grant administrators, long retired professors from Pitt Med school, undergraduates and grad students from #Pitt and #CarnegieMellon
Non scientists too
They kept coming up! So awesome. One undergrad (here for summer research) mentioned how hopeful this gathering and speakers made her.
(Won't post their pics/faces here - but it was super encouraging)
No drizzle - nice sunshine this evening at the #MellonInstitute steps here in #Pittsburgh for the #StandUpForScience Vigil
We have a poster board with names of cancelled grants at #CarnegieMellon and #Pitt and paper for people to write down why they do, or how they've been affected by cuts to #Science or why it's important to them
Lots of sidewalk chalk messages from people too.
Continuous trickle of people coming up to speak for few minutes.

Crowd estimate is 10K for the downtown #Pittsburgh #NoKings Protest (see ). Nice!
There are still two others later today - near Mellon Park and one in the South Hills, Mt Lebo area.
There's also the Vigil at my work building this evening. Off to that in a bit

Dr. Lucky Tran ( @luckytran )
posted a moving video where Jenna Norton (NIDDK Program Officer and one of the NIH signers of the Bethesda Declaration) explains more about why she signed.
Worth watching!
I made an attempt at writing up a transcript, I will try to post it as replies to this thread later.

Woot! I added 11 signatures to the quarter million needed to get Ohio SB.1 on the November ballot for a popular vote. (Hopefully an overturn!) Drop in the bucket, but with enough of those drops...
