Jenny Hansen<p>This reads like a love letter to the Austin public library system. It's wonderful. It really is a comfort to know such spaces exist and all the librarians and people that fill them. Why don't public libraries host book clubs?

That feels like a weird thing.

Also, they should partner with those shower/laundry vans that exist for houseless people to use.. that way they could shower and wash clothes, and then spend some time safe inside the library reading or just hanging out.

Also, why not have a TV room where people can watch the movies etc that you have there to be borrowed?

And how about a reading room where people can go to read AND CHAT about what they're reading.

Anyways, I have a lot of opinions about public libraries today.

@the_medium_kahuna - Focus on building an using tech that isn't within the constraints of capitalism helps for starters.

So I run Linux as my home and work computer. When I have to use Windows, its within a VM or remote desktop, etc.

I'm looking into a Fairphone for my daily driver.

I use public transit as often as I can or walk / ride my PEV when I can't. I'll use rideshare or a rental/lease when I can't use those others.

I grow my own food and buy from co-ops. I build and participate in mutual aid networks.

I'm looking on setting up solar. I don't plan on leasing. Instead, I'll take out a loan to own it over time. But you can look into buying used panels and get even cheaper.

I don't buy streaming movies. I use the library with the libraries free streaming apps like Kanopy, Hoopla, and Libby. Or I borrow physical media from the library itself.

I spend my free time carving out and participating in third spaces at locally owned restaurants or city managed parks, the library, temples, etc.

It's not perfect right now of course. We're trying to get out of the current situation. But there are lots of ways you can live and participate fully in society without engaging in capitalism.

Edit to say: I feel you and your frustration. I have it too. I went into "solve the problem" mode and not "listening and being" mode. Sorry!

With many churches closing, more and more community members are turning them into community centers.

They contain coffee shops, maker spaces, fitness, event space, community gardens, etc

"In 2015, the remaining church congregants put the old Rockville Church up for sale, and my family and I started the long process of purchasing the old building to convert it into a community center, finally closing on the property in 2017"

Bonfire · Turning an Old Church into a Community Center | BonfireMy neighborhood was a booming mill village during the Industrial Revolution, but has since become a very small, rural community. The mills closed in the mid-1900s, and membership dwindled in the 175 year old church until the doors closed for good in 2008. In 2012, several affordable housing units were built in the old mill...

@weblearning @OpenAccessElder Yes, Abbey! Nice work!

Shared the 2021 pitch with a regional #OER and #OpenEducation group. Apart from the promotion angle, it relates to concrete things done on the ground, particularly in #ThirdSpaces. And while I was linking it to efforts around resources in French (an important topic in our Francophone network), a related example came from students from both of Montreal's English-speaking universities who got together to do a "popup version" of the same idea.
