When you think you're doing good for nature, it could be counterproductive. Wildflowers growing on land previously used for buildings and factories can accumulate lead, arsenic and other metal contaminants from the soil, which are consumed by pollinators as they feed, a new study has found. The metals have previously been shown to damage the health of these pollinators.

As described this a detail of my pollinator garden piece made of collaged prints, for Manufactured Ecosystems. This shot shows my tiny sweat bee, Agapostemon virescens (Toronto’s official bee), flowers (purple coneflowers, Canada goldenrod, black eyed susan, wild geranium) and a hint at the bottom of a dead log, a red-spotted purple butterfly and a little white underwing moth.

#Pollinator garden gets an upgrade. That's my lucky clover, with basil, because "where basil grows, no evil can live". It grows next to a rose stone to grow the love alongside our luck, but also really 'cause those are great pollinator plants. Just trimmed the living mulch and made sure the perennials emerging weren't covered, the pruning should help the spring weeds not out compete the sunflower seedlings. Need to put a stone in the water so bugs don't drown. Lucky clover is also in the patch.

A small resin planter that looks like a stone portrait of a lady with flowers in her hair. Clover emerges from the top of her skull. A small dog dish of water sits in front of her for insects that visit. Needs a ramp or stone they can land on, I'll find one next time I go out. Under the steps to the porch are last year's sunflower stems and other twigs, as insect habitat. Under the porch is bare land that ant lions live in, and native bees can use as habitat. The small square patch is lined with stones I found in empty trailer park lots, for more habitat and something to mark out, "I said quit mowing here, I'm serious, even if that looks like weeds it's a garden!"
A four leaf clover that hasn't fully opened. It's the only one in her hair but there are cuttings of her in the indoor garden sprouting more. My garden is full of luck. There's some in the flower patch already coming up from last year, and I'll be making cuttings to fill it with more. Clover fixes nitrogen, to help fertilize my garden as it grows. The best luck is the kind you make for yourselves.

Bumblebees have to learn how to get nectar from flowers. They will usually visit the same flowers every day as long as they keep finding nectar and pollen.
This is called flower or constancy.
