Interesting podcast here about how not all forms of porridge are healthy. Not surprised that highly processed instant oat porridge is not very good, but chunky oats are much better.

My approach (mix of oat groats and jumbo rolled oats, & dried fruit all soaked overnight in oat milk) appears to be pretty good. I also add cinnamon, cardamom and flax seeds. Not tried adding nut butter, another suggestion.

I like trying to "add one more thing" to get the most diverse plant intake I can.

So much so, my #breakfast of overnight #oats with homemade granola topping was a bit OTT with 12 different 'plants' in it:

Overnight oats: oats with homemade oat milk, 4 walnut halves, 3 almonds, 3 cashews, pumpkin seeds, 1 date, 1 dried apricot, 5 blueberries

Granola: (oats again) plus flax seed, banana, vanilla, sunflower seed butter.

BBC FoodDr Rupy’s gloriously simple tactic for upping your veg intakeTo protect our health, experts say we should be eating 10 portions of fruit and veg a day and at least 30 different plants a week. Here’s how I do it without spending lots of money or time in the kitchen.

This recipe on the bag of rolled oats produces a thin, oat soup with a lot of extra liquid. I thought I did the recipe wrong the first time, but after trying it twice, I'm realizing it's just a bad recipe and there's nothing special about these oats that make them need more water than normal.

Life hack: homemade muesli/granola doesn't have to be toasted.
The oats are steamed during the process of becoming rolled oats, so are safe to eat without further cooking, processing, heat-treating etc.

I pour half a 1.5kg bag into a big lidded tupperware bowl, and add some shredded coconut, seeds, nuts, and a bit of dried fruit. Give it a stir, and that's breakfasts sorted for a fortnight.

Scoop 3/4 of a cup into a bowl, add milk, eat with spoon. (The British Dietetic Association suggests a portion size of two to three tablespoons, but to be honest, that sounds more like a garnish than an actual breakfast.)

_The Evening Post_, 30 November 1923:
      ANXIETY FOR GRAIN CROPS
       TOO MUCH DRY WEATHER
(BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
                        ASHBURTON, This Day.
Anxiety is felt for the #grain #crops owing to the recent dry, hot spell. Unless the #weather breaks soon, #oats will be ready to harvest before Christmas, with a light crop; while #wheat, of which much is spring sown and backward, promises to ripen off with only a 60 per cent. average yield. Pastures are also affected. One live stock man stated that a day’s soaking rain would benefit him a hundred sterling [£100 = ca. $12,000 today].
