I declare the discovery of a new, clean, nice smelling and not broken petrol station toilet that is only just off my route a victory. That said, we need more and roadside amenities plus or other navigation software needs to have a toilet option! Looking for the nearest petrol station, hotel or restaurant doesn't guarantee they have or will allow you access to their toilets.

Dear Friends,
Five gallon flush #toilets? Again? 1.6 GPF since 1992 (Bush I). EPA WaterSense certification for toilets since 2006 along with EPA site, while it lasts, at www.epa.gov/watersense

He fixates on this for diversion. Don't be diverted. Your toilet maker isn't going back. Neither am I. Nor am I paying $.22 KW/H for tungsten filament bulbs. Just silly.

Best: having gender neutral restroom
Next best: having disability restroom, implicitly gender neutral (exists separately from gender hostile ones)
Plain bad: neither of them exists
Wtf: Oh we have disability restroom but require key from personell, because lol
What the actual f: Oh we showed disability restroom icon but we actually don't have it 😉
Plain f: disability restrooms somehow inside the gender hostile separated rooms

Huge improvements in #water, #sanitation, and #hygiene access in #China
Between 2000 and 2020, access to safe water in China increased from 45.7% to 91.3%, access to sanitary #toilets rose from 18.7% to 78.5%, and access to hygiene #bathing facilities rose from 26.0% to 88.4%. An analysis of household data also shows significant improvements in accessibility across urban-rural divides.
This is pretty mindblowing that they were that far behind 20 years prior and they fixed it that quickly.

BioMed CentralSpatiotemporal characteristics and socioeconomic inequalities in water, sanitation, and hygiene access in China from 2000 to 2020: analysis of data from three national censuses - BMC Public HealthBackground Access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities presents a significant global public health challenge. This study aims to investigate the temporal and spatial characteristics of WASH access in mainland China, as well as the socioeconomic equity, using data from national censuses. Methods We analyzed households’ data from three national censuses spanning 2000 to 2020 to examine the characteristics of safe water, sanitary toilets, and hygiene bathing facilities over time. Spatial clustering of WASH facilities in 2020 was assessed using Moran's I analysis. Socioeconomic disparities in WASH access across provinces were quantified using the Slope Index of Inequality (SII) and Relative Index of Inequality (RII). Results Between 2000 and 2020, access to safe water in China increased significantly from 45.7% to 91.3%, access to sanitary toilets rose from 18.7% to 78.5%, and access to hygiene bathing facilities climbed from 26.0% to 88.4%, reflecting continuous improvements in WASH access. Urban areas consistently outperformed rural areas, and the eastern region showed higher access rates compared to the central and western regions. Spatial analysis revealed statistically significant clustering of sanitary toilets and hygiene bathing facilities at the provincial level in 2020. Equity analysis indicated a notable improvement in the fairness of WASH access over the past two decades, with decreases observed in both SII and RII metrics. Conclusion Mainland China has made substantial strides in enhancing WASH access over the last 20 years, accompanied by significant improvements in provincial equity. However, persistent regional disparities underscore the need for targeted financial support to rural, central, and western regions to further enhance WASH accessibility.

OK, Mastodon/Fediverse plumbing and toilet enthusiasts

I have a toilet that requires holding the handle open to fully flush, i.e. the flapper is closing too quickly before the tank empties

Do I need to replace the flapper or is there a way to adjust how quickly it closes?

Toilets in the Southern Hemisphere flush unexpectedly

Photo by Gabor Monori on Unsplash

Everybody knows that toilets in the Northern Hemisphere flush normally. This is due to the Don Corleone effect, which pushes the water the normal way. Now, in the Southern Hemisphere, the Don Corleone effect also exists but works in reverse. This fact makes the toilets there work in an unexpected fashion.

We asked Carlos Morales for a demonstration of the effect. He asked us to stand back, for safety. Then, he pulled the toilet’s handle down, sending a stream of water to the ceiling. We had witnessed, with our very own eyes, the Don Corleone effect in action.

Morales told us, “As you can imagine, this effect creates a steady stream (pun intended) of work for us janitors. Nobody likes to go into a bathroom whose ceiling is covered with a jet of feces, or just piss.”

We flew to the equator with Morales to hold another demonstration there. When he pulled the handle at the equator, nothing whatsoever happened. He explained, “That’s because, here, the Don Corleone effect cannot act. Consequently, all the toilets have to be manually emptied.”

Next time you flush your toilet, and it works normally, thank the Don Corleone effect for this, and thank us for having educated you.

Have building codes else where been amended to increase the number of cubicles in women's bathrooms?
