What does it actually mean when we say that generative AI raises ethical questions?
🔵 Dr. Thilo Hagendorff, our research group leader at IRIS3D, has taken this question seriously and systematically. With his interactive Ethics Tree, he has created one of the most comprehensive overviews of ethical problem areas in generative AI: lnkd.in/ebzZYaU7
More than 300 clearly defined issues – ranging from discrimination and disinformation to ecological impacts – demonstrate the depth and scope of the ethical landscape. This “tree” does not merely highlight risks, but structures a field that is increasingly under pressure politically, technologically, and socially.
Mapping these questions so systematically underlines the need for ethical reflection as a core competence in AI research – not after the fact, but as part of the epistemic and technical process.

I was halfway through writing an abstract about 'ludic discourse' when I realised I was translating my actual thoughts into #gamestudies vocabulary. Ended up at an #environmentalhumanities conference instead, talking about how games make ecological grief playable. Sometimes the best conversations about games happen in rooms that never mention procedural rhetoric—for me at least. Wrote about disciplinary wandering, available tomorrow: open.substack.com/pub/nodiscip #Academia #InterdisciplinaryResearch

📢 Save the date! Our next IRIS Insights is coming up this Thursday, June 26 at 2:00 PM (CEST).

We’re delighted to welcome Prof. Monilola Olayioye, who will speak on:
🎙️ "Tumors in Dishes: New Opportunities for Personalized Medicine"

In her talk, Prof. Olayioye will explore how patient-derived tissue samples can be used to advance cancer treatment. She’ll share insights from the 3R-US team on developing human tumor models – often called “tumors in dishes” – and how they are applied in the lab to test new therapies. The talk will also highlight approaches like bioprinting, alternatives to animal testing, and cancer biotherapeutics designed to activate the immune system.

🎯 The goal: more personalized and more effective cancer therapies.

This is the third talk in our IRIS Insights series, which showcases interdisciplinary research from the IRIS community and provides a space for dialogue across fields.

IRIS Insights I Nico Formanek: Are hyperparameters vibes?
April 24, 2025, 2:00 p.m. (CEST)
Our second IRIS Insights talk will take place with Nico Formanek.
🟦
This talk will discuss the role of hyperparameters in optimization methods for model selection (currently often called ML) from a philosophy of science point of view. Special consideration is given to the question of whether there can be principled ways to fix hyperparameters in a maximally agnostic setting.
🟦
This is a WebEx talk to which everyone who is interested is cordially invited. It will take place in English. Our IRIS speaker, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Maria Wirzberger, will moderate it. Following Nico Formanek's presentation, there will be an opportunity to ask questions. We look forward to active participation.

In this seminar, we’re conducting an in-depth documentary study that reveals the complex dynamics between religious practices and “migrations routes” experiences. With a colleague of mine (theological approach), we're examining what the migration journey does to the lived religion for migrants (refugees, forced displacement…) and faith-based organizations (FBO).

♻️⬇️🚨NEW PAPER ALERT♻️⬇️🚨

Led by #AdriftLab’s PhD student and all-round superstar, Alix de Jersey, and co-authored by supervisors Jenn Lavers (@SeabirdSentinel), Graeme Zosky, and Jack Auty.

RESEARCH SYNOPSIS: in this review article, we discuss the far-reaching, complex, and poorly understood threat that pollution poses for human and wildlife health. We argue #InterdisciplinaryResearch is crucial to encapsulate the diversity of these consequences. We highlight how applying advanced techniques and expertise adapted in medical research to wildlife exposed to pollutants offers a unique opportunity.

Additionally, we bring light to the challenges impeding the progress of this research including lack of funding. To do this, we obtained data on #funding for medical & biological research from major research councils for the last 20 years. Only 0.5% of available funds were dedicated to pollution-focused research and only 0.03% of this already tiny fraction was dedicated to explaining the #wildlife experience!! (read that again and let it sink in!) 😳👎

Paper title: “The understudied global experiment of pollution’s impacts on wildlife and human health”

#Interdisciplinary #research should be the standard, so it's nice to see every now and then calls for #InterdisciplinaryProjects funding. The thing is our institutions are organised in disciplinary departments, we publish in disciplinary journals, our access to the literature is disciplinary, referees are experts in our disciplinary micro-sub-field, hiring committees are disciplinary, our teaching is disciplinary through and through, and we're supposed to do #InterdisciplinaryResearch?

For people working on climate and energy matters and practicing as "hard" scientists, this is definitely worth a read.

"Hard" science is the study of human behaviors, if by hard we mean truly difficult.

Social sciences all too squishy? Consider that we can build nuclear reactors without knowing when any particular U-235 atom will fission. Bulk human material has predictable properties. Ignore this to our detriment.
