Aug 15th is the Feast of the Assumption. In 1358 the Lady of Clare celebrated with a banquet at her London townhouse; her guests were the Minoress community of Franciscan nuns, & 28-year old Prince Edward, later known as the Black Prince.

A complex painting on wooden panels. Across the middle, the body of the Virgin Mary lies prone on her bed, as if sleeping (the Dormition). Above is the standing Christ, making upward gestures with his hands & welcoming her to Heaven (the Assumption); her soul is depicted as a small ethereal figure nestled in the cloak of her son Christ, near his heart. In the top corners, two angels lean down from the clouds, their hands in prayer. Their wings are striped: one blue & white, one red & white. Haloed wellwishers surround the body; some still grieving, most looking upwards in awe. The painting is from an altar frontal made c.1330s for the Dominican priory at Thetford or Norwich. The frontal is now in the Musée de Cluny; its companion retable is in the church at Thornham Parva.

Buon Ferragosto!

The #Ferragosto celebrations began in 18 BC, in celebration of a #military victory and it was usually tied in with other summer festivities. It was also an opportunity for many to rest after long months of agricultural labor during the #harvest. Like many other #Catholic holidays, the #Assumption purposefully coincides with these #Pagan summer holidays because Ferragosto was so popular that the #church couldn’t suppress the celebrations.

🧵 1/9 #Assomption (#Assumption of Mary) today, is a holiday here in France. In German we have the name "Kräuterweihe" that reminds much better to the #pagan history behind that date. Indeed, it was one of the most important days of agricultural calendars. Here, I talk about the #CulturalHeritage especially in #Alsace, its connection to #nature and even #climateChange - not about the Catholic idea. For #ClimateDiary it's a day which should change the date: weather #traditions don't work anymore.

The inner part of a 9-part "Breverl". On a black background is posed a primitive collage of a small St Mary in the midst of pressed plant parts like in a landscape. Over her head a chaotic collection of triangles from fabric, gold or texts, a golden medal, a willow catkin, a silver cross of Lorraine and more. These "folding letters" were sold by the Catholic church but had purely magic meanings. They contained images of saints, finds of nature, parts of (often falsified) relics and symbols. They were folded up and worn close to the body in splendid envelopes, as protection or against illness. (Exhibition of our museum).
