Very early morning at the harbour in Beppo, Oita. An array of small wooden boats have been moored for the night, their sails lowered, their crews absent, tarps lying across their decks. Beyond, the rolling hills of the coast are shadowy in the dim light, while an unseen sun paints the horizon coral pink with the coming dawn. The "hells" of Beppu.
Hot water and steam create ponds in different color. This is Akaike Jigoku and its bright red color contrasts the blue Umi Jigoku, both of which can be found on the same grounds.

Enjoying a sunny afternoon stroll through Beppu.
Compared to other Japanese cities Beppu was a truely relaxing experience.

From my trip to Japan: The Demon of Kamado Jigoku, Beppu, Japan.

#Beppu has nine 'hells' (boiling hot springs). Kamado Jigoku, the "cooking pot hell", consists of several boiling springs. The demon statue in the photograph represents the cook, and is also known as "Oni" (鬼).

Picture 2: one of the "cooking pots". Temperature varies between 50 and 100 degrees C.
