@fediverso

Nice brief #fediguide for newcomers written by @HaruEb that isn't overwhelming. 👏 Folks on #Hajkey #Iceshrimp & #Firefish servers can use antennas to follow #hashtags.

Please give Haru some reaction emoji love on their original post.

Blåhaj ZoneJo (she/her) (@jo)Moved to a #Iceshrimp, #Firefish or #Misskey instance and missing watching #Hashtags? Well do I have something for you!! **Antennas.** Antennas are effectively custom timelines. They work approximately like watching hashtags, but they can look for normal text as well. You can add as many phrases as you like and the results can be filtered with an ignore list. You can make an antenna that just shows posts from specific users and notifies you when they post something new, you can make an antenna that collects posts containing or excluding certain key words, or you can make an antenna that collects only posts with files attached. You can even make an antenna consisting of “Posts from specific users” with “Show replies” checked. **Setting up** You can set up antenna by going to the **More!** section on your sidebar, and selecting **Antennas**. Press **Add +** to create your first. This is where you can also manage & edit previously created antennas. Images: 1) Where to find **More!** on the sidebar (highlighted) 2) Where to find **Antennas** in the More! menu (highlighted) 3) My antennas page showing *Add +* button and my previously created antennas. 4 & 5) When you click **Add +** you get this page to set up your antenna. I've set one up as my Calckey antenna and another to alert me when PastaThief posts. There's a lot to go through here. Expect a separate post sometime soon. 6 & 7) What those antenna feeds look like. 8) On our progressive web app you can access your antennas by selecting the UFO in the top right corner. 9) Clicking on the UFO button brings up all my antennas and the link to manage/edit them #Mastodon #Fediverse #Feditips #Calckey #Hajkey I plan on writing up a fuller explanation soon, but happy in the meantime to help anyone wanting to set them up. How to have a good time on #mastodon / #calckey / #iceshrimp / #firefish / #fediverse

A guide by me based on my first week here!

1. Search for and follow
#tags / #hashtags related to interests you have, e.g. #flowers

2. If you find a post you like, check that person's profile, lots of people will have enough info just in their bio for you to tell if you'd like to see more from them, but if not, check their post history. As a rule though, you might as well follow them and you can unfollow if they post stuff you aren't into.

3. Look at all the other tags on posts you see in your searches or home feed to see other ways people might tag similar content, i.e. in our
#flowers example you'll find #bloomscrolling !

4. Once you've followed a few people and/or tags, your home feed will start to populate with content and you can repeat points 2 and 3!

5. Use what you see as inspiration for your own posts, be they text or image posts. If you post images, you should ALWAYS add alt-text for
#accessibility. Many #fediverse users will simply not follow accounts or boost posts without alt-text. It's easy and actually kinda fun to think about what a vision impaired person might need in a description, so just do it! (EDIT: I have changed my thoughts on alt-text thanks to @TeaMug@elekk.xyz see reply below but including the better instructions they gave here)

"The more useful advice is that if you (generic) find alt-text easy, and especially fun, to write, follow the hashtags Alt4U, AltText4U and AltTextForYou, so you can pitch in when someone requests alt text on their images. (Hashtag symbol left out to avoid filling the tag) Provide alt-text in replies to images you notice without it, without judgement." -TeaMug

Make sure you also use
#tags so others can find your posts and put content warnings on sensitive content (this will vary from instance to instance check your local rules and use common sense)

6. Search/follow the
#feditips tag for more tips and tricks!

And that's it! Anyone who knows more than me and sees this, I'd love to hear your
#feedback on anything I missed or that seems off.

Other than that I wish everyone who reads this a lovely day and happy scrolling/posting.

📽️ Promotional and informative video(s) about the #Fediverse :fedi:

Hey all,
I'm trying to start a project where we create a video or a series of videos that explain the Fediverse and promote it as well as the :joinfediversewiki: #JoinFediverseWiki and especially it's instances list.

You can read all about the project here:
joinfediverse.wiki/Join_the_Fe

I need people who are willing to help come up with ideas and implement them.

So please :boost: this post so these people will find me/the project.

#FediTips / #FediGuide

there *is* a way to verify yourself on Mastodon (not sure if other parts of fedi use it)

go to preferences -> profile, and scroll down. it will say “verification”

now, you put that lil code on your website or whatever, and itll show up with a green check mark and color (see my profile for an example)

i dont have a step by step for Where it needs to go for each place (your personal blog/site, versus your patreon) so if Others have resources on that, feel free to share

#FediTips / #FediGuide

blocking an instance = a suspension.

this means you cannot follow/interact with users/instances. you wont see their replies in timelines, mentions, whatever.

silencing = limiting (or a soft block)

you can follow users on a silenced instance, but they usually will not appear on timelines unless you @ one another or are following them.

both, from my understanding are technically defederating since its removing content

#FediTips / #FediGuide

filters are a great tool to use, especially now that with the new update it shows why a post was filtered And gives you the choice to show the post anyway

filters can be found from your preferences area~ (i recommend taking a good look in there, lots of ways to customize your experience)

you can set what timelines itll be on, a timer for how long you want to filter something for… its great

#FediGuide / #FediTips

hashtags dont work in the CW subject line, but will work in the body of the post

use CW liberally to cut out clutter/long posts, ASCII, or emoji spam, avoid spoilers, make jokes, but also for triggering or overwhelming topics.

to @ someone, youll need to use their whole address: @user@instance.place
