Italy moves to curb 'right of blood' citizenship claims.

Italy's government has announced it would tighten citizenship laws to put a stop to people going too far back in their family history to make a case for citizenship.

Currently, according to Italy's "right of blood" or "jure sanguinis" laws, people with proof of an Italian ancestor alive after 17 March 1861, when the Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed, can get nationality.

#Maine Law Firm Tells #PublicSchools to #ResistICE Enforcement by Destroying #Immigration Records

By Steve Robinson January 26, 2025

"A leading progressive law firm in Maine is advising public school officials on how they can effectively resist potential immigration enforcement actions that may involve the families of minors who attend government-run schools, including by destroying evidence of potential immigration crimes.

"The advice may place school officials in the legal crosshairs of the Trump Administration under a new policy advisory distributed by the U.S. Department of Justice, which warns state and local officials not to interfere with federal law enforcement activities.

"'[S]chool officials should generate a plan for what to do if immigration officials seek to conduct activities at school, and provide appropriate training to those who may come in contact with officials,' law firm Drummond Woodsum warned in an 'Immigration Client Alert' distributed on Jan. 21.

"A copy of that advisory email was obtained by the Maine Wire and is published [at the link] in full.

"The memo advises clients who may have evidence that a student and that student’s parents or guardians are not U.S. citizens or are present in the U.S. without authorization.

"According to Drummond Woodsum, school officials should destroy those records or stop collecting them so as to #obstruct or prevent federal immigration officials from enforcing American immigration law.

"Schools may have collected data on students’ #USCitizenship, #nationality, #CountryOfBirth, #USEntryDate, the date a student first attended school, or the #ImmigrationStatus of the student or their parents or guardians, the memo states.

“'[T]his information should not be stored as part of a students education record and should be destroyed as soon as it is no longer needed,' the memo states."

#TIL: #DonaldTrump's #mother was actually.. an #illegal #immigrant!

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_A

Did his mother also eat #dogs and #cats?

Well, i guess so, also, i also guess that trump shouldn't get the #nationality because if immigrant #children born in the us cannot be american, then by its own logic, i think the same should apply to him, ah?

Regards dear #people.

Edit: it seems that the #trumps mother got a #visa to emigrate to the us, i kindly apologize for posting this, however...

The track "Voices from Bethlehem" by Little Drummer Boy was released at #Christmas 2018, but for me it is still one of the most touching #songs I know. It makes one thing tangible: no matter what #nationality, #origin, #language or #religion - we can all communicate if we want to. And we all have more in common than divides us. For me, that's the most beautiful message that we should remember, and not just at #Christmas, right? Especially in these times!

Quote from horstson.de/weihnachtsliederch

"The #singer Nathalie Murad and her singing colleagues Fouad Moubassaleh, Milad Fatouleh, Amjad Khair and Fadi Ghattas sing the beautiful Christmas carol "Little Drummer Boy" in many languages, including #Arabic, #Persian and #Italian."

@anttim @chris @ollij @torvalds which I think is kinda bad because almost all people didn't choose their #nationality / #citizenship and many juristictions (i.e. #Iran) don't allow people to do any kind of #renounciation whatsoever.

  • Which is a problem even for those that fled said regime and in some cases (i.e. Iran) even their decendants by virtue of being their children (even if they ain't born in nor ever entered i.e. Iran)…

I'd like to poin to several #LGBTQIA* from #Russia (some even working on #FLOSS) that fled #Putin's regime which refuses to acknowledge their remounciation and would rather hatecrime them in their embassy for i.e. living while trans, but I'm not gonna namedrop them without their explicit consent.

  • Same applies to people fleeing #NorthKorea: Pyongyang doesn't recognize #Reounciations and treats those who dare to re-enter with a new identity as spies and high treasonists. I'm not gonna elaborate further on what that means...

IDK what #rationale is being abused, but by that logic they'd also have to yeet #code from #sanctioned parties (i.e. #Huawei [employees]) from the #Linux kernel!

A Bengali Hindu family’s struggle to prove their Indian identity to Bengaluru cops

Palash Adhikary and his family were jailed for months on suspicion of being undocumented Bangladeshis. Bengaluru police have now placed an ‘extraordinary’ burden of proof on them, despite possessing stacks of Indian government documents.

Hear, hear! If we wish countries to "climb out of #nationality into #internationality" (en.wikisource.org/wiki/Seven_P), to refute blind #nationalism, and to work together hand-in-hand, then those individual people who make up #Europe, who are represented by their #MEPs in #European #Parliament, must surely be able to read, understand, and work to legally mandated #PublicSafety #standards.

@toxtethogrady makes a sterling point; if I might humbly extend the analogy, the free (as in speech) and open publishing of the King James #Bible had a phenomenal effect upon the thinking and the minds of countless people the wide world o'er. I have never heard a good unifying definition of #leadership, so I propose here that it is a synonym for control (or concordance, or alignment) of the ideological-battlespace (or neuronal- or memetic-arrangement). The exact wording is less important here than (forgive me) the meme, or smallest-transmissable-notion. That depth of understanding delivered, by a bible one could understand, was a treasure beyond words. So it is with your goal.

You're doing God's own work. Your success will be for the glory of every man, woman, and child protected by those standards. You are striving to make it easy for everyone to be excellent. Thank you.

(P.S.: I did not intend this to sound so breathlessly effusive, but I'm at a loss to find any part I might delete, because I want to cement in your mind the gratitude felt toward those working on your goal, at least by me. I'm open to anyone rewording the post if they care to!)

Why the Iranian government neglects the nation’s cultural heritage

The Iranian government has consistently failed to safeguard the nation’s cultural heritage, that is the backbone of Iran’s national identity.

Authorities in the city of Golpayegan demolished a remnant of an Achaemenid-era rampart without even consulting cultural heritage authorities.

Some believe the ruling clerics see a conflict between #Islamic #faith and the concept of #Iranian #nationality, and willfully downplay manifestations of Iranian culture in favor of #evangelism of political Islam.

Stimson CenterWhy the Iranian government neglects the nation’s cultural heritage • Stimson CenterThe neglect and underinvestment in Iran’s priceless heritage has deepened a schism between a public that continues to value those traditions and a government that finds this lineage to be at best an annoyance and at worst a threat

On the #BBC: Does #Scotland want its kilted #king. Mmm. As a Scot there are few things that wind me up about the #RoyalFamily as much as Prince Charles or rather #KingCharles as he is now insisting on wearing a #kilt so much in Scotland. It isn't how Scottish people #dress everyday. It isn't something we can relate to or recognise in our experiences. It's playing at #nationality, playing at #culture, playing at dress up. And it's woefully inappropriate and ill judged. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-654

Regarding Japan's longstanding ban on dual #citizenship, an Asahi Shimbun editorial asahi.com/ajw/articles/1484632 is fine as far as it goes, but it focuses on the type of #Japanese #expatriates in #Europe who are suspected of changing #nationality to evade taxes. To us #immigrants in #Japan, it is more important that our half-Japanese "haafu" kids and others should not feel forced to choose one cultural allegiance simply because #biculturalism is not recognized or understood here. See "Dual Nationality in Japan: Learning to Love Ambiguity" at academia.edu/38566597 or shingetsunewsagency.com/2019/0
The law is not enforced in Japan, so it can be like a joke that vaccination makes three passports. Our happy-go-lucky sons have no conception of what it would be like to be an outsider or to agonize over their cultural #identity.
