- FDroid (App Droid-Ify)
- IzzyDroid (App Droid-Ify)
- Obtainium (parce que y a des maj dans le dépôt Fdroid qui arrive beaucoup trop tard)
- Accrescent (parce que plus sécure ?)

You have probably seen this #viral #infographic on #eu #digitalsovereignty by #reddit user u/lukakopajtic. It was viral but not very accurate 😅 recommending #bluesky and #firefox as "EU alternatives"? How? Anyway, he just updated the infographic, and it's much, much better! Most issues have been corrected. I think there is still a couple of issues I disagree with: 1) recommending #matrix instead of #jabber #xmpp 2) recommending #lineageos instead of #grapheneos (but OK, I can understand this if the focus is on self-sovereignty only), 3) recommending #droidify instead of #accrescent (but, even here, I can understand if the goal is to replace #playstore ), and 4) recommending #thunderbird as a comparison to #gmail (nothing wrong with Thunderbird, but that's an email client, not a Gmail-like suite provider, I would have rather recommended #mailfence or #mailbox ). Kudos for the initiative though, the intentions are good!

I really want to keep using & supporting #gecko but #Mozilla is going down the toilet- what to do?

#Firefox desktop -> #LibreWolf (that was easy, simply copied my profile and it all came back exactly as before)

#Firefox mobile -> #IronFox (also easy on #GrapheneOS via #Accrescent store)

I can still use #FirefoxSync on both which is nice 'cos I am not quite ready to leave that convenience yet.

Now it's mostly just a matter of replacing my dependency on #Pocket (compiled out of LibreWolf), but that was on my list of services to deprecate anyway...

Installing FOSS apps on your phone sometimes certainly feels like an eternal XKCD 927 purgatory.

- Apps by GrapheneOS for some GrapheneOS apps (and assorted ✨other✨ apps.
- Obtainium for installing apps directly from source/repos.
- Neo Store for installing apps who cannot be arsed to have .apk files in their repos (#AntennaPod), yet without dealing with the typical F-Droid shenanigans.
- Accrescent, because hell, why not! The more, the merrier!
- And, of course, Google Play Store for the corporate goblins.

I haven't switched out my laptop yet but I'm now running IronFox on my phone. That led me to a new supposedly privacy focused Android store app, Accrescent to use instead of F-Droid.

The most secure way to install IronFox is from Accrescent - and this is the installation method we recommend most users use. Accrescent is a new and upcoming, free and open source Android app store - with a focus on privacy & security (See here for a list of some of Accrescent's key features). It's currently used by other privacy and security-focused projects, such as Molly, and recommended for use by GrapheneOS, among other privacy and security-focused projects and researchers.

I can still synch to my Firefox profile with IronFox and it had all the mobile extensions (in their own repository) I expected.

@m2m I'd love to get a Fairphone. At the moment I have a Galaxy S24 from my employer which is fine.. I've replaced all the default apps/keyboard with FOSS/offline alternatives and use both #Accrescent and #Obtanium for APK installations.

I'm hoping alternate firmware will be available to this phone sooner than later.

@normplum @celenity @accrescent That's the biggest problem with Accrescent I see. You can not ensure that an app you want to install is not really malicious one submitted by someone else. Also if there are multiple flavors/builds (foss/with proprietary blobs) you can not check which one you are going to install. You have to trust that Accrescent reviewer does their job well.

So personally I would still prefer Obtainium over Accrescent.

@GrapheneOS While I appreciate bringing up the security concerns the existence of alternatives to #FDroid I do not think we have those when it comes to pure FOSS apps without the usual big corporate trackers/libs. #Accrescent lists a few apps and fails to provide relevant information about them (such as requested permissions). E.g. #Qlango includes multiple tracking libraries by #Meta / #Facebook and doesn't look like it is FOSS to any degree. Even while the #FDroid repo is not carefully curated I don't run into traps like these. 🤷

There is a need for a curated and maintained FOSS app repo and currently there is nobody but @fdroidorg providing it. #Obtainium, #Accrescent are mostly option for expert users who exactly know who to trust and what they are looking for. @Kulei @newhinton

Recordemos que #Telegram no es una app de mensajería ni segura ni privada aunque se nos haya vendido como tal, y en verdad se acerca más a una red social comercial y centralizada, aunque sea de lejos mejor que las otras (al menos por el momento).

Para comunicaciones privadas la recomendación suele ser #Signal (disponible en las stores de Apple y Google) y tiene un fork compatible con #OpenStreetMap y #UnifiedPush llamado #Molly (disponible en #Accrescent y en su repositorio de #FDroid).

Mención especial a #Briar para mensajería local a través de Bluetooth y #SimpleX para comunicación sin identificadores, que suelen ser otras recomendaciones aunque personalmente no he tenido oportunidad aún de probarlas.
